about

Garry Kasparov vs. Deep Blue is an algorithmic work in six movements. The album is based on the famous chess match in 1997, between the then chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov and the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue. The music is derived from the moves made in the six games of that match, which was billed at the time as the ultimate man vs. machine encounter.

At the time of composing the work, (June-November 2006) I found the match to be heavily symbolic of the uncertain relationship that existed between human beings and technology, and to Artificial Intelligence in particular. Kasparov lost the match, and this result seems even more unsettling today, at a time when advancements in Artificial Intelligence make the situation in 2006 seem almost quaintly retro.

The work is indirectly indebted to Erik Satie’s notion of furniture music, but, given the fact that themes of the defeat and displacement of humans by Artificial Intelligence are encoded in the work, this is furniture music with a rather dark aura.
